Upon finishing my Master’s Degree, whilst feeling accomplished and happy, I also came to a realisation that the real world had commenced.
A few weeks passed, but I never got comfortable applying for graduate jobs in Web Development; Indeed and CWJobs were the initial go-to. I hit a few speed bumps due to distance, job roles etc, however, I was always looking for a more exciting opportunity. Long story less long, I eventually got an offer from none other than Clevercherry, after applying through their website. Their website impressed me straight away and looked like the kind of web project I wanted to work on myself for the long-term. After 6 months I can honestly say it is the best position I could be in; including distance (as I am a Brummie through and through), environment (everyone is friendly and good company to be around on a daily basis), and work (it is exactly the field I want to be in). I couldn’t have asked for more - working in the heart of the city centre, and in an Agency environment. The ‘work hard play hard’ notion of Agency life is something that has helped me thrive; we work hard as a team to get the job done whilst maintaining our high standards, but then afterwards we enjoy the rewards and social life that come with this and being part of this team.
I didn’t know what to expect when I first arrived at the office. Because of my previous work experience environments, I expected it to be stern, with little communication, where you get your head down for 7.5 hours and then leave. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It is a genuine team and even a family environment. Not to mention, we have a bar, and whilst typing this, I am realising how convenient it is, a whole bar! I have had a fantastic first 6 months at Cherry, getting myself involved in some great projects as part of an innovative digital team. I have learnt more than I could have ever imagined, and I look forward to continuing this personal development, both as a developer and as an individual. The role has allowed me to apply my Master’s Degree to develop solutions in a real commercial world, whilst also take on completely new skillsets and knowledge. I really can’t complain about my job, and a huge personal thank you goes out to James Vicary, who has been great as both a Web Development mentor and a colleague.
From property developers to training providers to furniture companies, I’ve had the chance to work on some amazing projects, and also been able to learn about many industries along the way. I’ve also been able to gain insight into other roles with the Agency, such as graphic design, social media, account management, videography and so on. I’m very grateful to Cherry for this opportunity, and I can’t believe I’ve already been here for 6 months!
My first 6 months have been awesome, and I’m looking forward to enjoying many more.
