Ahead of International Women’s Day, we caught up with our Client Services Director, Laura Williams, to discuss her experience of working in the digital industry and how her past has shaped her career today…

What is your job role and day-to-day tasks?

My role as a Client Services Director is quite multifaceted. I'm responsible for a wide range of jobs including crafting strategies for our clients, ensuring efficiency within the team, and handling communication with both the team and clients. I oversee the agency, from managing staff day-to-day through to staying updated on the latest technologies. No two days are the same - I could be engrossed in client work, pitching new strategies, conducting training plans for staff, or handling recruitment.

What career path did you take to get here?

At the start of my career, I studied a range of subjects in college and university, including English, history, film studies, and photography. However, after deciding to study fashion and brand promotion and marketing at university, I wasn’t entirely sure where to start with finding the right graduate role. My first opportunity in the industry was as a Marketing Executive at a law firm, where I was first introduced digital marketing – which wasn’t even actually covered during my degree, so was a whole new world to me. I eventually transitioned to agency side, where my knowledge just grew and grew thanks to the amazing people that I worked with, which set me up for the role that I work in today.

How has the industry changed since you started?

The industry has undergone significant changes since I began - it's become much more complex and competitive. With the rise of digital marketing and evolving algorithms, the focus has shifted towards the entire user experience and engagement. What used to be about keywords and domain authority now demands responsive, user-friendly websites and tailored content strategies that are ever-evolving. Nothing ever stands still in digital, which means even after over a decade I’m still learning new things every day.

Have you faced any issues or adversity along the way?

Fortunately, I've never felt held back in my journey. Working in an ever-changing industry has its challenges, but it has also taught me to tackle things head-on and adapt to the industry's evolution. I've learned to embrace change and face battles as they come. The digital industry is one where no two days will be the same, and learning to adapt to that is so important.

What qualities or skills do you believe are essential for success in this industry?

Resilience, adaptability, and teamwork are essential in this industry, the ability to pivot and collaborate is crucial for staying ahead in the changing landscape. We're all in this together, and everyone brings something valuable to the table, so it is important to remember that working as a team is vital in a digital agency.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would tell my younger self to have more faith and confidence in my abilities. It is important to remember that because the digital industry is constantly evolving, you will constantly be learning, and things will change. You need to be able to adapt.
