Facebook has changed its corporate name to ‘Meta’ as part of a major re-branding to bring together their apps and technologies under one new company brand, CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed at the company’s Connect 2021 event. Zuckerberg said that the social media platform’s new name will be Meta ‘to reflect who we are and what we hope to build’ while also, broadening its reach beyond social media and into virtual reality (VR) too.

He said: “We are a company that builds technology to connect. Together, we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy.”

However, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp will remain, but under the Meta umbrella.CEO, Mark Zuckerberg announced the changing of the company’s name will reflect on their commitment to the ever-evolving future. In their press release, the company said that bringing everything together, ‘under one new company brand’ with the focus on their new platform will be to ‘bring the metaverse to life and help people connect find communities and grow businesses’.What will this now mean for marketers and advertisers? With the main rebranding focus being the future creation of ‘Metaverse’ this represents the future for not only Facebook, but for marketing as well. While we are still in early days, metaverse represents the next massive opportunity for brands to engage in new ways with their audience.
